Hungarian team at the Pyeongchang Special Olympics World Winter Games

The 10th Special Olympics World Winter Gamesheld in Pyeongchang, South Korea from January 29 through February 5, 2013 wasattended by ca. 2000 sportsmen from all around the world. The Special OlympicsWorld Games bring public attention to the talents of people with intellectualdisabilities competing under the flag of their respective countries.

Hungary has delegated a 28 member teamaccompanied by a 23 member staff to the multi-sports event. Our sportsmenachieved great results and collected 11 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals. Ofcourse we regard the participation itself and the experiences gained by ourdelegates and staff during the 2 weeks they have spent in Korea as a greatopportunity.

Before the start of the Special Olympics World WinterGames all members of the Hungarian delegation were hosted by a Korean Buddhisttemple in Seoul in the frame of the so called “Host Town” program, helpingparticipants to acclimate to the host country and get acquainted with the Buddhistculture forming an integral part of the Korean World Heritage. The organizershave involved about 100 helpers to provide a colorful program for theparticipants.

The Embassy of Hungary in Seoul has organized awhole day event for the Hungarian team on the day before their return toHungary. The program included a visit to the royal palace in Seoul, a spectaculartheater show and other activities.
